Kenya's next general election is due in August 2027. Article 101 of the Constitution sets it on the second Tuesday of August in every fifth year. If you want to vote, now is the time to make sure you are registered, and registered in the right place.
Who can register. Article 83 says you can register as a voter if you are an adult Kenyan citizen (18 years or older), are not declared to be of unsound mind, and have not been convicted of an election offence in the last five years.
What you need. Your national ID card or a valid Kenyan passport. You must register in person, because your fingerprints and photo are captured.
Where to register. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) runs continuous voter registration at its constituency offices, and holds mass registration drives before elections. You register in the ward where you want to vote, so choose carefully: you will vote at a polling station in that ward.
Check your details. IEBC offers ways to confirm you are registered and see your polling station, including by SMS and online. Check early. If your details are wrong or you are not on the register, you can still fix it during the verification period before the election.
Moved since the last election? You can apply to transfer your registration to your new ward at an IEBC office. Do it well before registration closes.
Your vote, your rights. Article 38 protects your right to vote in secret and to make political choices freely. Nobody, including an employer, a landlord or a local leader, can lawfully force you to vote a certain way or demand your ID card.
