Purpose
Haki Zako works with communities, individuals seeking rights information, and partners across Kenya. This policy sets out our commitment to ensuring all interactions connected to our work are safe, respectful, and protective of everyone involved.
We recognize that some people we engage with may be in sensitive or high-risk situations. Safeguarding is central to how we operate.
Principles
We are guided by the principle of doing no harm. We commit to respecting dignity, autonomy, confidentiality, and informed participation in all engagements. The safety of vulnerable persons always takes priority.
Scope
This policy applies to all staff, consultants, volunteers, pro bono lawyers, collaborators, and partners working with or representing Haki Zako in any capacity.
Working With Communities
Participation in all Haki Zako activities is voluntary, informed, and consensual. We do not publicly share identifying information without permission. Our work is designed to inform and empower — not to replace legal representation or guarantee specific outcomes.
Where individuals raise urgent or high-risk concerns, we refer them to appropriate services or professionals.
Working With Individuals in Sensitive Situations
Individuals may disclose experiences involving violence, abuse, discrimination, or legal risk in the course of our work. We listen respectfully and without judgment, and do not pressure anyone to share more than they are comfortable sharing. The safety and wellbeing of the individual always takes priority over documentation or publicity.
Digital and AI-Assisted Interactions
Haki Digital (bot.hakizako.org) may be accessed by individuals in vulnerable situations. The platform includes referral pathways to support services and crisis resources. Users are not required to identify themselves. Query data is handled in accordance with our Data Protection and Privacy Policy.
Photography and Recording
Documentation only takes place with appropriate consent. Special care is taken when minors are present. Images or stories that could expose individuals to harm, stigma, or retaliation will not be shared publicly.
Reporting Concerns
Concerns about harm, misconduct, or unsafe behavior connected to Haki Zako activities should be reported to complaints@hakizako.org. All reports will be acknowledged within 5 working days, handled confidentially, and where necessary referred to relevant authorities.
Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually. The current version is always available at www.hakizako.org.
